Kaieteur News- The Guyana Fire Service said the fire Sunday morning at the Outreach Ministries headed by Bishop Juan Edghill was deliberately set.
In a statement, the Fire Service said subsequent to a detailed review of video surveillance footage and additional surveillance inspection, the cause of the fire was updated.
“Initial reports suggested an electrical fault; however, further investigation revealed that the cause of the fire points to arson,” the statement said. In the footage, a hooded individual was observed entering the premises at approximately 04:48 hrs, shortly before the fire was reported.
The GFS is currently working alongside the Guyana Police Force in the ongoing investigation. They warned that any person or persons found culpable will face the full brunt of the law. Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact the authorities. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
In an earlier statement, the Fire Service stated that the early morning fire was caused by a defective light bulb. “Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a blaze at a two-storey wooden and concrete building, which was identified as a church hall. The property, owned by Bishop Edghill, sustained severe damage to the structure and its contents,” the GFS said. Luckily, no one was reported as injured or rendered homeless as a result of the fire.
“Fire tenders WT#124, 95 and W/C#28, 24 were dispatched, along with 18 firefighters under the command of Officers S/L Watts, S/L Devent, L/FM Roberts, and L/FM Thompson. Extinguishment was carried out using two jets from W/C #23 and #24,” the GFS added. The GFS is urging members of the public to make certain all electrical fittings and appliances are maintained properly, to avoid overload and overuse of circuits.
