Goldsmith robbed of $500K, other valuables
Kaieteur News- A goldsmith, identified as 46-year-old Dharmera Arjune, was, on Saturday, robbed of $500,000 cash, five penny weights of raw gold worth $146,000, a black haversack worth $10,000 and a quantity of jewellery, the value yet to be determined.
According to the police, the man resides at Lot 215, Brittania Public Road, West Coast Berbice. The incident took place on Saturday, May 24, 2025, around 16:45 hours at the same address.
“Two identifiable males of African descent, one armed with a firearm, are suspected to have carried out the crime…The scene was visited at approximately 17:00 hours on May 24, 2025 by a team of policemen,” the statement said.
Arjune owns a jewellery shop, which is a flat concrete building, located on the northern side of the Britannica Public Road. The structure faces south and is within a securely fenced yard. It is further secured with mesh on its northern side, and the only entrance is to the north, which is internally secured by bolts but externally secured by locks. There are no CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the building.
“According to Mr. Arjune, he was seated at his workbench cleaning jewellery brought in by customers when the two suspects entered his workshop. They asked if he had chains for sale and later requested to see a one-ounce chain and inquired about the price per pennyweight of gold,” police said.
According to reports, the men retrieved the black and grey haversack from underneath the counter, which contained cash and jewellery. While he was in the process of displaying the chain, one of the suspects, a tall man of medium build, clad in a grey jersey, pulled out a black handgun from his waist and issued a warning to him, “Don’t move or I’ll shoot.”
The terrified man grabbed his haversack and fled northward from the shop. The second suspect, who police said was clad in a red t-shirt and shorts, went after him, and subsequently, a scuffle ensued. The first suspect approached and fired a shot towards Arjune’s dog, which missed. He then seized the haversack.
Police said, “The suspects escaped south along the public road and fled in a white motor car, though the victim could not recall the vehicle’s registration number. One spent .32 shell casing was recovered near the bathroom in the victim’s yard; it was photographed by the CSI and retrieved as evidence. No injuries were reported.”
The area surrounding the scene was canvassed for CCTV cameras, several were observed, and footage is pending review. Witness statements were taken, and the scene was photographed. The incident was reported to the police at approximately 16:50 hours Investigations are ongoing.
