Toshaos’ head criticises media, citizens who protest for justice for Adriana

Kaieteur News- Chairman of the National Toshao Council (NTC), Derrick John during his remarks on Monday at its annually held conference, criticised media houses for writing critical articles about the NTC and individuals who supported protest actions over the death of Adriana Younge and police’s killing of two Linden youths, Keon Fogenay and Ronaldo Peters.

According to John he is using the opportunity to call them out. “I want to call out the various media houses because they are publishing some really disturbing articles it’s not good, we got to be more mature when we reporting we got to be more accurate in our reporting,” John said while delivering the opening remarks at the NTC conference being held at the Arthur Chung Conference Center (ACCC) Liliendaal , Georgetown.

A recent newspaper article had accused the NTC of giving more speaking time to government officials rather than the Toshaos and other village leaders. The newspaper quoted the Alliance for Change (AFC), a political party suggesting the NTC might be more aligned with the government rather than looking out for the rights and wellbeing of the indigenous people.

The NTC was not pleased with that article and responded with a statement refuting the claims. “This is a deliberate attempt to undermine the credibility of the NTC Conference, the most respected and comprehensive forum for Indigenous leadership in Guyana”, the NTC responded in a statement while calling the AFC claims baseless.

After “calling out” the media for “writing disturbing articles” against the council, John had some very strong words for those who protested over the death of Adriana Younge and Police’s killing of Linden Youths, Keon Fogenay and Ronaldo Peters. He suggested that the protests were organised and carried out by political parties. “I also want to use this opportunity to call out all political parties we have to be more mature and more civilized,” he said before adding “we have seen for the past month or two months or so, the disturbance that is taking place.” “…and these things are affecting us, because if you have to block a main passage way like in Linden blocking bridges that is going to our indigenous communities in the hinterland areas, when you have to block public roads that everyone has to use on a daily basis what are you doing to our fellow Guyanese and especially indigenous brothers and sisters”, he continued. John iterated that he is using the opportunity “to talk to political parties.” “If you have an issue there is a way you have to deal with it professional way and not to disrupt people’s lives”, John said.
