Kaieteur News- A 31-year-old security officer was on Monday remanded to prison for possession of narcotics.
Ulric Fingall of Lot 134 South Better Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD), appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore to answer the possession of narcotics charge.
Fingall pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on May 16, 2025 at Space Gym’s parking lot Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, he had 3.810 kilogrammes (kg) of cannabis in his possession.
The accused told the court that he was unaware of what was inside of the box since he was taking it for someone (person unnamed).
The prosecution objected to bail while informing the court that on the day in question, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) officers were acting on information when they visited Space Gym and found Fingall carrying a brown cardboard box in the parking lot.
Fingall, when approached by a CANU officer, dropped the box. The officer identified himself and told the accused that he was acting on information that he was in possession of narcotics.
The officer searched the box and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was found in eight transparent plastic bags. The defendant was told of the offence committed, cautioned and arrested.
He was taken to the CANU headquarters with the narcotics which was tested, weighed, labelled, sealed and lodged.
Meanwhile, Fingall was represented by Attorney Dexter Smartt who told the court that on the evening of May 16, his client was hired to escort someone who had to transact business. The court was told the person was carrying large sums of money and required security.
Smartt said that his client was instructed to make a payment and collect a package. He complied and as he was returning to the vehicle, he was intercepted by CANU. Smartt told the court that the vehicle Fingall’s client was traveling in, left him at the location.
The attorney said that at the time of the bust, the box was closed and was opened by the CANU officer who discovered the narcotics. Fingall said he was unaware of the contents of the box.
As a result, the attorney requested reasonable bail noting that Fingall is a father of two and has nobody to take care of his children.
Bail was denied and the matter adjourned to June 16, 2025.
