Coalition talks on hold pending APNU-AFC negotiations-Dr. Hinds
Kaieteur News- Co-leader of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), Dr. David Hinds, said Monday that coalition talks with A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have been put on hold in light of partnership’s negotiations with the Alliance for Change (AFC).
Speaking during his party’s weekly press conference, Dr. Hinds said “we intend to resume those talks shortly. WPA intends to place a common policy programme and electoral strategy at the top of the agenda. Our approach to coalition talks would be guided by fraternalism, independence, and realism.”

Regarding the formula to contest the polls, the party plans to retain the one adopted in the 2011, 2015 and 2020 elections, where the presidential candidate was chosen from the party with the largest electoral reach and capacity.
“Similarly, the latter party would be accorded the largest proportion of the list of candidates, potential parliamentary seats and cabinet ministers should the coalition be victorious. WPA would not seek to influence who the other party or parties put up as their standard bearers. WPA reserves the right to determine who represents our party in the positions awarded to us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Hinds reiterated the need for biometrics, as well as the sanitisation of the current voters’ list to ensure the integrity of the elections.
“Since the PPP majority at GECOM has closed the door on these requests by opposition, we call on the international community including CARICOM to lend their voices and influence to push the PPP to reverse course,” Dr. Hinds stressed.
Back in April, WPA had urged sister parties, People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and Alliance for Change (AFC), to iron out their differences, noting that instead of confrontations, the units should be working to reach a consensus.
Hinds had made the call after the AFC released its ‘approved conditions’ for any coalition with the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) to contest the upcoming general and regional elections.
“As the PPP’s vulnerability begins to manifest itself, WPA reiterates its belief that a grand coalition of opposition parties stands the best chance of unseating the ruling cabal in a free and fair election. While it is being said in some quarters that the opposition’s base is not yet motivated, we believe that that condition is temporary,” Dr. Hinds told the media during his party’s weekly press conference.
The WPA co-leader explained that a coalition that comprises willing persons who are guided by a united purpose would be an energising boost to the base in a short period of time. Despite the findings of the various polls recently conducted, he said the party firmly believes that a united coalition will certainly prevail at the upcoming elections once they are free and fair.
He had urged the parties to get things sorted out as soon as possible, as “history will not be kind to us if we allow short-term differences to blind us to long-term implications. WPA recognises that it is not a central player in the unfolding negotiations, which are guided by perceptions and realities of electoral strength. We respect those dynamics.”
With five decades of political experience under its belt, the WPA cautioned supporters that “there is great danger in substituting the party for the wisdom of the people and the lessons of history. We hope good sense prevails.”
