Guyana Pandits’ Council condemns ‘Baby Skello’ attack on Hinduism

Kaieteur News- Members of the Guyana Pandits’ Council, the Uma Maheshwar Mandir, at La Jalousie, and the Hindu community held a peaceful protest on Saturday, condemning the recent attacks made by local artiste, ‘Baby Skello’ on Hinduism.

The peaceful demonstration, which was held at Gap Road, La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara (WCD), saw a turnout of about 40 persons, including the attendance of members of the Uma Maheshwar Mandir and its Pandit, Surendranauth Tiwari, who was joined by Pandits Krishna Patiram, Vijay Koopchand and Avinash Nandalall.

Speaking with Kaieteur News on Saturday, Pandit Tiwari, who is also a member of the Guyana Pandits’ Council, explained that the demonstration on Saturday was aimed at showcasing Hindu unity while demanding respect, dignity and protection under the laws of Guyana.

“Oftentimes Hindus- and I am being frank- Hindus are being labeled, they are being put in a bracket, so to speak, and this is not only happening now but years now. From growing up, from a child to an adult, this is always happening and nothing has been done by the government to address this issue, not only this issue but many other issues and nothing is being done to the person (making the attack),” he explained.

He noted that, following the recent attack, many Hindus are hurt and are demanding some kind of justice through the law.

“Basically, we are condemning the attack and we are calling on the relevant authorities, which is the ERC and of course the Guyana Police Force, to prosecute this individual because this is the first time in my life- and there were other attempts to attack, label and criticize- but the words he used were extremely profane and malicious,” the pandit explained.

He said that as a pandit, “I have respect, love for any other denomination and the same must be given to Hindus and I am asking for the entire country… Guyana to stand with us, because we are living in a multicultural society and we demand some kind of respect.”

Members of the Hindu community, on Saturday, held a peaceful demonstration at Gap Road, La Jalousie condemning the attacks made by ‘Baby Skello’ over vulgar song about Hindu Goddess, Lakshmi.

Kaieteur News reported that the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) issued a stern warning to the local artiste on Friday, demanding the removal of the song that portrays the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi in a vulgar, sexually explicit, and blasphemous manner.

The Commission stated that it is also exploring legal action under the laws of Guyana.

In a statement, the ERC said it “strongly condemns” the song, describing it as deeply offensive to the Hindu community.

“This content constitutes a deeply offensive act that strikes at the heart of the Hindu community’s religious beliefs and is wholly unacceptable in a society that values mutual respect and coexistence,” the ERC stated.

While reaffirming its support for freedom of expression, the Commission emphasized that such freedoms must be exercised with respect for all religious and cultural traditions in Guyana.
