Kaieteur News- Guyana had better watch out, because that US-Ukraine deal brokered by President Trump could have some application here. It’s the world of Trump and his new ordering and reordering of situations for an American edge, a considerable one. Ukrainians may be happy with what they see as a great deal. Peace and security from their big, superpower neighbour circling, looking to put them out of existence as a nation. Peace has its price, and President Trump just wrung the last cent out of it for America. Guyana should take note, because it also urgently needs a superpower security blanket.
Venezuela is a major presence on Guyana’s northwestern border, has long cast covetous, hostile eyes on Guyana’s lands and treasures. Practically speaking, like the Ukraine, Guyana does not match up well against its increasingly aggressive neighbor. Guyana wants peace and confidence that its biggest businesses will not be interrupted, nor its existence threatened. It could cost this country, as the US-Ukraine deal provided blueprint and precedent of what could come right here.
Like the Ukraine, Guyana also has its lavish share of oil and gas assets, along with minerals. We would not be surprised if in addition to the gold and uranium, that rare earth deposits are present. Also, Guyana has its strategic location, backdoor proximity to an unruly Venezuela, and there is the rest of Latin America, as surplus for the ambitious in America. One of Trump’s priorities is to Make America Great Again. He made a solid start with Ukraine deep in Europe. Guyana is an open invitation for a repeat with Venezuela put behind its proper coordinates, and made to see things the American Way. Neighbors at loggerheads with each other, or demagogues running out of control, attract President Trump’s interest. Where there is the unfriendly, there is opportunity, as he just showed the world with Ukraine.
Most of the politicians in Guyana, if not all of them, are on hands and knees seeking America’s smile of consideration. Guyana has a problem; America has the solution. These are the kinds of contexts that make Trump reach for his dealer hat and clamp it more tightly on his head. His deal wheels are ready to roll. We think that Guyana could be on the US agenda for an equivalent deal involving minerals for keeping the Venezuelan menace all bottled up deep in Caracas. There is nothing that would please Guyanese politicians more, who all turn cartwheels to find favor with the Trumpian American vision. The PPPC Government of Ali and Jagdeo would do anything to solidify its power with American help. Whatever is required to seal that deal, President Ali and Vice President Jagdeo already have their pens in hand. There is no Zelensky here, one who eked out some concessions for Ukraine (past assistance doesn’t count, can’t be collected). One who scraped some terms that looks promising for his own people. In Guyana, the only people that the Ali and Jagdeo government care about are those who are closest to it. A shoo-in could be in store for President Trump when he looks at what Guyana needs, and what it has to offer. Guyana needs security, which the world knows. Guyana also has its mineral riches, which makes it an attractive proposition for any decent dealmaker.
Sweetheart mineral deals for American enterprise would be part of the package. A sweeter component, both for the US and Guyana, would be talk of a military base where such makes much sense. Nobody is objecting here, and nobody seems to care that the whole of this hemisphere could be reengineered politically. The Venezuelan beast must be tamed, and the US is enticed to stand with Guyana. Guyanese politically ambitious have their dreams, and there is readiness to barter. In America’s Trump and Guyana’s Ali and Jagdeo, there is a match made in heaven. It is of men who see the world their way, and who brook neither objection nor competition to their hold on power.
Sadly, what we see happening to Guyana is that it is poised to strengthen its status as an American lackey. Border disputes, pariah leaders, and treasures create the perfect storm for a master dealmaker like Trump.
