Kaieteur News- Two security officers were on Friday remanded to prison, when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to a murder charge.
Rickey Andrews of Lot 3 Bamboo Drive Meadowbrook, Georgetown, and Kennard Persaud also known as ‘Troy’ or ‘Tattie’ of Water Street, Tiger Bay, Georgetown, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
They were not required to plead to the indictable charge, which allege that on March 6, 2025, at Croal and Longden Streets, Stabroek Georgetown, they murdered Leon Alexander Bartrum.
The prosecution told the court that on the day in question, the defendants who are friends, were standing on the corner of Croal and Longden Streets, when the now deceased approached Persaud who pulled out a cutlass from his electric bike and dealt Bartrum several chops to his head and about his body. The victim who was also armed with a cutlass, dealt Persaud several chops about his body.
According to the prosecution, Andrews armed himself with a wood and also dealt the victim several lashes about his body. The victim then walked to the corner of Charlotte and Avenue of the Republic, where he collapsed.
The court heard that an ambulance took Bartrum to the Georgetown Public Hospital Cooperation (GPHC) where he was admitted.
Persaud was initially charged for attempted murder on April 9, 2025 and was remanded. However, on April 25, 2025 Bartrum succumbed at GPHC.
The court was told that Andrews and Persaud admitted to the offence during a video audio interview and were subsequently charged for the capital offence.
Magistrate Azore remanded the duo to prison and the matter was adjourned to June 13, 2025. However, after hearing his fate, Andrews told the court that he did not hit anybody but was instead trying to stop the men from fighting.
“Me ain’t lash nobody, I try to stopping it, but me ain’t lash nobody. Me ain’t frighten to talk wa happen, because I was there from the start,” Andrews said, before leaving the court.
