Kaieteur News- Things went from bad to worse on Monday evening, as fiery protests broke out across Guyana, following the autopsy report that 11-year-old Adriana Younge died by drowning.
The day started with scores of Guyanese peacefully protesting outside the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) awaiting the results. But by midday, things began heating up.
Tensions rose after a GPHC security guard manning the gate allegedly punched a woman. Things calmed for a bit, but escalated again, this time, into a battle between protesters and riot police who were deployed to restore order and clear blocked roads leading to GPHC.
Police ranks fired rubber pellets while protesters resisted by returning bricks, glass bottles and other debris in their direction.
However, it was nothing compared to what transpired after the three pathologists brought in to conduct the autopsy concluded that Adriana died by drowning.
Her father, Subrian Younge, rejected the results saying, “This is no result to me” and it appeared as if the country agreed with him, as fiery riots broke out across Guyana with looting, vandalism of businesses and the burning of vehicles.
The terror began in central Georgetown with the blocking of roads on Regent, Camp and Lamaha Streets Georgetown. Videos surfaced of looting taking place. One of them showed individuals looting a Chinese supermarket on Lamaha Street. Persons seen trying to break into the City Mall at Camp and Regent Streets. Reports also surfaced of looters also invading Burger King.
As police rushed to clear Georgetown roads of protesters and debris, another fiery protest began at Agricola East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Residents started a fire along the East Bank Demerara Public Road before grabbing an MMC Security pick-up and dumped it into the inferno.
Protesters also vandalised a newly built Chinese Supermarket in the area, and looted a Chinese restaurant. Police ranks in riot gear and fire fighters responded to that scene.
While this was happening, several villages in Berbice did the same, Belladrum, Hopetown and Number 28 Village on the West Coast of Berbice, and Corriverton Corentyne Berbice, Region Six.
Fiery protests also erupted at Central Mahaicony and Calcutta Village.
Lucky Dollar was looted at Vreed-en-Hoop Junction, West Coast Demerara (WCD), while fiery protests erupted at Pourdroyen, West Bank Demerara (WBD) and Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara (WCD). More fiery protests began along Mandela Avenue, and sections of Albouystown. Sherriff Street was also blocked, reporters were attacked and some car tyres were punctured.
Not long after Kaieteur News received reports of roads being blocked with burning debris at Parfaite Harmonie.
There were also reports of similar protests at Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, Region Two. A Lucky Dollar branch was also reportedly looted at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
As police struggled to control the situation, ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were seen backing them-up by patrolling the streets.
Meanwhile, there were reports of several robberies taking place at various locations.
One of the suspects, Orlando Samuel, was reportedly shot by police after he and others were seen trying to rob a man at Camp and Quamina Streets, Georgetown. The others managed to escape, but he was hit and later died while receiving treatment at the GPHC.
Several other individuals also reported being robbed.

(Kaieteur News) – There is no question that Guyanese would have noticed the brooch worn by Delcy Rodríguez during her recent visits to Grenada and Barbados.
