Man remanded for murder of Berbice businessman

Kaieteur News- A 30-year-old man was on Wednesday remanded to prison for the alleged murder of a businessman during a robbery.

Troyden Trellis, of Lot 28 Savannah Park, New Amsterdam, Berbice, is accused of fatally shooting 53-year-old Hemchand Utam at his business place, located at his home at Lot 119, Edinburgh Village, East Bank Berbice.

Trellis appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Michelle Matthias. He was represented by attorney Akim Lampkin. The indictable charge was read to him in court, and he was not required to enter a plea. He was subsequently remanded to prison.

During the hearing, the police prosecutor informed the court that the investigation was complete, but requested three weeks to disclose evidence to the court. The magistrate granted the request and transferred the case to the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. Trellis is expected to reappear there on May 19, 2025.

The tragic incident unfolded around 10:30 a.m. on April 17, while Utam was conducting business at his home. Police reported that while he was doing business, a man pounced on him and said, “Give me the money.”

A scuffle then ensued, which resulted in the suspect discharging a round from the firearm he was armed with. The suspect fled the scene, leaving an injured Utam behind. The victim was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. The suspect then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery.
