Kaieteur News- A fire of unknown origin claimed the life of a 49-year-old man on Monday evening at his West Coast Berbice (WCB) home.
The deceased has been identified as Floyd Moriah, also known as “Fidel,” of Lot 625, Number 30 Village, WCB.
Moriah reportedly lived alone in the one-storey wooden home. The fire reportedly occurred between 20:05 hrs and 21:00 hrs.
According to police reports, Moriah was trapped inside the building at the time of the fire and was unable to escape.
His sister, Corlette Moriah, told police that around 20:00 hrs, residents noticed flames coming from the house. The fire quickly engulfed the structure as neighbours raised an alarm.
The Guyana Fire Service was immediately alerted. “Fire Tender #121, led by Sub-Divisional Officer Crawford and team, responded and managed to extinguish the fire. Units from the GPL Emergency Response and Ambulance Service were also on the scene,” the police confirmed in a statement.
Following the extinguishing of the blaze, fire officials conducted a walkthrough of the premises. During this inspection, the charred remains of Moriah were discovered inside the destroyed structure.
“The scene was photographed, and the remains were transported to Bailey’s Funeral Home, where they await a post-mortem examination,” the statement added.
Investigations are ongoing.
