Kaieteur Sports- As part of its Elite Training Programme for athletics, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will host Felix Sánchez, the Dominican Republic’s two-time Olympic gold medallist in the 400m hurdles and back-to-back World Champion, beginning today.
The programme, which runs until April 28, will see the 47-year-old Sánchez working closely with Guyana’s youth and senior athletes, and coaches as the Ministry intensifies its efforts to develop track and field in the country.
Minister Charles Ramson, who first met Sánchez during his visit to Guyana for the Aliann Pompey Invitational last year, noted that the Government’s investments are aimed at helping Guyanese athletes reach their full potential.
Before transitioning to coaching, where he playing a key role in the Dominican Republic’s rise in track and field, Sánchez was widely regarded as one of the most respected and accomplished hurdlers in the sport.
Sánchez captured Olympic gold in the 400m hurdles at Athens 2004 and London 2012, and claimed World Championship titles in Edmonton 2001 and Paris 2003. He also earned a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka.
Born in New York City and raised in the Dominican Republic, Sánchez competed collegiately for the USC Trojans, where he was a Pac-10 Champion and All-American before turning professional in 1999.
Shortly before his 36th birthday, he set the Masters M35 world record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 48.10 seconds. He retired in April 2016.
