Dear Editor,
In Guyana, you can get away with rape—if you’re willing to pay for it. If the victim is over 18 and agrees to financial compensation, the State is essentially powerless. A rapist, even a serial one, can walk free.
This isn’t justice. It’s a loophole that turns one of the most violent crimes into a transaction. And it sends a clear message: money matters more than accountability.
How can a system designed to protect victims allow this? The law must be changed. Survivors deserve better. So does the country.
