─ says Granger’s decision kept WPA out of Parliament.
Kaieteur News- Co-leader of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), Dr. David Hinds, has suggested that the leader of the list should not be taken from parties within the coalition contesting the upcoming elections.
He said the person taking up the position of power must understand the system, but should have no affiliation with any party.
The leader of the list controls who enters Parliament. They have the power to fire and select persons who were chosen to serve, as either a Member of Parliament or a regional representative.
Hinds’ comment followed a statement from the Alliance for Change (AFC) which stated that whoever the presidential candidate of the coalition is, the leader of the list should come from any party other than that of the candidate.
He said the WPA prefers the 2015 model used, where Dr. Harold Lutchman held the position, but was not a member of any of the contesting parties.
“We are more comfortable with that, and partly it’s subjective…Subjective in that we have been the victims of the leader of the list, being a member of the coalition. Mister Granger was the leader of the list at the 2020 election, and the fact that the WPA is not in Parliament, this has to do with his sole decision as leader of the list,” he explained.
The WPA co-leader told reporters that while in the position, President Granger, “took it upon himself to appoint a representative for us and not a representative that we preferred, and efforts by us since then to get him to correct that error did not result in the affirmative and so we, for subjective reasons, are weary of the leader of the list coming from a political party in the coalition.”
He explained further that if the leader of the list is chosen from one of the political parties, it would mean that the party will have absolute control over who represents the constitutient parties within the coalition.
Based on this, the WPA holds the belief that building a coalition would be a difficult task. However, his party understands the temptation of the larger parties to assume control over certain things.
“We feel that it is better and we would be comfortable with someone outside of the political parties and the coalition to be the leader of the list or the representative of the list, as it’s called,” Dr. Hinds concluded.
