Businessman on $1M bail for killing cane cutter
Kaieteur News- A 65-year-old businessman appeared at the Mibicuri Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and was placed on $1 million bail for manslaughter, following the death of a cane harvester in Corentyne, Berbice.

Moonie Ramnarine of Lot 14 Lesbeholden, South Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice is accused of shooting and killing 29-year-old Youganand Chaitram of Lot 19, Alness Village, Corentyne, during an altercation at Ramnarine’s bar in Lesbeholden, Black Bush Polder.
Ramnarine was arrested on the same day and was subsequently charged for the said offence. He appeared before Magistrate Tauna Hardy who read the charge to him. Ramnarine was not required to enter a plea.
Attorney-at-law, Bernard Da Silva, who represented Ramnarine, argued bail for his client. Da Silva explained to Kaieteur News that he argued for bail, noting that the charge was bailable and that Ramnarine is not a flight risk. He also stated that Ramnarine had been cooperating with the police and had previously been on $1 million station bail, which he had adhered to.
As a result, Ramnarine was placed on $ 1 million bail and is scheduled to return to court on April 1, 2025 for further proceedings. According to police reports, the altercation began when an argument occurred among several patrons at Ramnarine’s beer garden. The businessman told police that the dispute escalated when Chaitram and others started breaking bottles and threatening each other.

Ramnarine attempted to close his gate when Chaitram and another man allegedly threw him to the ground, injuring his elbow. While on the ground and allegedly being threatened with bottles, Ramnarine said he discharged two rounds from his firearm, striking Chaitram, who collapsed outside the bar. Ramnarine then secured his business, reported the incident to the police, and surrendered his firearm and license. Upon police arrival, they recovered two .32 calibre shells—one inside the shop and one outside near the gate. Chaitram was taken to the Mibicuri Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body, found clad in a green jersey and brown 3/4 trousers, was examined by authorities.
