Kaieteur News- Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn has issued a stern warning that anyone who is appointed Governor of Essequibo and placed at Anna Regina will be charged with treason and locked up.
Speaking at the Guyana Police Force Inspectors and Sergeants Annual Conference on Wednesday, he told the audience that the charges will also extend to any person who supports the movement by Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro to hold elections and to appoint a governor as well. “…any person, Guyanese or otherwise, if it’s a Guyanese who is appointed to be governor and be in place at Ana Regina, we will charge that person for treason and lock them up. Each and every one of them, they’re gonna be charged for treason, and anybody who is supporting them will also be charged,” Benn said. “The issue of Essequibo was settled a long time ago…”
The minister said that currently, President Irfaan Ali is in the United States of America, having discussions in relation to the recent incursion by Venezuela. While he commended the ranks of the Guyana Defence Force for a job well done in the recent shooting during which, according to information received, three of the Venezuelan attackers lost their lives, Benn cautioned the ranks present at the conference that when out in the field, they should do their job well. “They don’t have a right to come into our place, take off the monitoring the AIS, so we don’t know where they are and intimidate people. It is not innocent passage, but we (don’t have) warships and the planes and all these things to deal with them in the ways that should be done. So, we have to get support…while we try to build up our asset capacity and training and so on,” he said.
He charged the ranks of the joint services who are out at the borders to be prepared to defend Guyana’s territory until help arrives. Benn said Guyana cannot give up Essequibo as the country will be nothing without that county, “as this is where all the mineral wealth, and forests are. It also holds ancestral wealth and deep historical value of the Guyanese people.” He continued: “The first European settlement in this part of the Guiana’s, was in Essequibo, and if you go and see the names of the villages and so on, the Dutch and the French names and all those, it was Essequibo first. Demerara and Berbice came later when the British and them did the settlement for establishing British Guyana.”
On March 7, this publication reported that Guyana has filed in the registry of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), a request for provisional measures stopping Venezuela from electing a governor for Essequibo. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had noted that Venezuela, intent on annexing an area, is in violation of the Court’s Order of December 1, 2023 and the fundamental norms of international law.
According to the Ministry, Guyana has informed the Court that the planned Venezuelan elections are scheduled to take place on May 25, 2025 and would inevitably be preceded by preparatory acts, including acts within Guyana’s Essequibo region, affecting the Guyanese population and Guyana’s sovereignty over its territory.
As a result, in order to preserve its rights, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said Guyana is requesting that the Court orders Venezuela to refrain from any acts within or affecting its sovereign territory, including the Essequibo region. Further, Guyana requested the Court to convene hearings on its request as soon as possible, to enable such provisional measures as might be indicated by the Court, to be issued before serious and irremediable prejudice to Guyana’s rights occurs. “Guyana’s current request seeks confirmation of this by the Court, as well as an explicit directive to refrain from any electoral activities within or affecting this territory or its population, which consist of Guyanese nationals,” the statement outlined.
