Kaieteur News- A pedal cyclist identified as 32-year-old Keron DeFreitas lost his life on Friday evening after a collision with a truck in the Hill Foot area, Linden Soesdyke Highway.
The accident occurred at about 18:45h.
Police in a statement on Saturday said that the accident involved a truck bearing registration number GAD 5947 that was driven by 67-year-old Ovid Spencer.
“Enquiries disclosed that the lorry was proceeding west along the southern drive lane of Hill Foot Road, whilst the pedal cyclist was proceeding in the same direction on the western side of the road, in front of the lorry,” police said.
As the truck was overtaking the pedal cyclist, the front left portion of the truck hit DeFreitas, resulting in him falling onto the roadway from the impact. Subsequently, the front wheel of the truck rolled over the man and his bicycle.
The injured man was picked up by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Spencer is currently in police custody assisting with investigations and a Notice of Intended Prosecution was served.
