-Only track and field events on the cards
Kaieteur Sports- The inaugural National Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships were officially launched on Wednesday at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) in Kingston.

Inaugural National Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships officially gets on the way March 11 – 13.
The newly restructured event aims to showcase the country’s top secondary school athletes while reinforcing the Ministry of Education’s commitment to youth development and sports excellence.
Scheduled to take place at the National Track and Field Centre, March 11 – 13, the championships will focus exclusively on track and field events, unlike previous editions that featured swimming and cycling.
To ensure a well-organized and competitive event, a dedicated management committee has been established, comprising representatives from the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), the Ministry of Education, teachers, and officials from the Fire Service and the Police Force.
Dr. Ritesh Tularam, Deputy Education Officer (Technical), explained the rationale behind shifting the event from November to March to provide young athletes with a proper platform for growth and preparation ahead of future competitions.
He said that by aligning their development with career opportunities in athletics, they aim to enhance their potential to excel at higher levels.
He further pointed out that the restructuring intention is to also produce well-rounded athletes better prepared for regional and international competitions.
In previous years, Dr Tularam added, athletes competing in November often missed out on key opportunities to participate in major international events.
By adjusting the schedule and competition format, Dr Tularam stated that they’re bridging that gap, ensuring they have a stronger advantage heading into competitions like the CARIFTA Games.
A key change in this year’s event is that the Ministry of Education will now directly oversee the championship’s organization, taking over from the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU).
However, experienced personnel who have been instrumental in past editions will continue to play a crucial role in its execution.
The event is made possible through sponsorship from the Government of Guyana, with Banks DIH Limited serving as the primary beverage sponsor.
This year’s competition is expected to attract approximately 2,000 student-athletes, all competing for medals, honours, and the prestige of securing victories for their respective school districts.
With the regional qualification phase now complete, the national stage is set for Guyana’s best secondary school athletes to compete for supremacy on the track and in the field.
(New-look ‘Nationals’ set for March 11 – 13)
