An electrician was jailed for stealing streetlights from the young professional housing scheme at LBI, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Sharmo Jones, 36, of Plaisance Squatting Area, ECD appeared on Friday before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate Court. He pleaded guilty to simple larceny and was sentenced to one-year imprisonment.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that LBI residents reported the theft of street lights on September 24 during an outreach held in the community by the Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Coal. Police were later informed and an investigation was initiated.
On September 26, police arrested Sharmo Jones and were able to recover some 24 stolen street lights. He reportedly admitted to committing the crime and said that he had installed at various locations.
Jones was charged with simple larceny on September 27, 2024 and the electrician was subsequently jailed for stealing streetlights.
