Dear Editor,
The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Mustapha in the National Newspapers said that the “Cuban engineers who arrived here in May to assist the sugar industry will be here for 12 months based on performance”. When asked what will be their specific purpose by the media, Mr. Mustapha said “It will provide critical support to promote the mechanization of agricultural operations as a means of improving agricultural productivity and to utilize available human resources better”.
Is Mr. Mustapha on a different plant or is he focused on the NDIA contracts to even bother about the falsehoods being fed to him by the GuySuCo Board of Directors?
Insiders in the Industry are complaining that although Mr. Paul Cheong promised them interpreters in May, none were provided and to date, they are struggling to communicate with the Cuban engineers, so very little communication is being done with the Cubans.
These complaints are being flagged all over social media and in Richmond Hill. People are saying that nothing of substance was added to the knowledge of the Guyanese technicians with the arrival of these Cubans. Even the documents they prepared were of a poor standard and the locals have much more informed information on this matter. I am told that the Guyanese technicians are demotivated because the Cubans are being paid twice as much as the Guyanese with free housing, and fixed hours (only 40 hours) and if they work overtime it is double, while the Guyanese senior staff do not get overtime. I am told that the 12-month cost of this project will cost the Corporation $164 million (Guyana money) including flight back to Cuba, free housing, and free food for all of them. The Guyanese engineers do not get free food from GuySuCo. But the PNC and AFC as usual – are asleep at the wheel and allowing the Minister of Agriculture and the Board of GuySuCo to ransack the accounts. Fed up with this incompetence in the Ministry of Agriculture. My deepest condolences to a very good former Minister of Agriculture, Dr Simpson Da Silva. May his soul rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Leroy Charles
