Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to highlight the abuse of power by the Guyana Police Force during the peak hour of morning traffic at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
First of all, let me take the chance to commend the management of the Demerara Harbour Bridge on the early start of the double lane exercise as well as allowing the West Bank traffic to use the right-hand lane of the road leading to the bridge which has relieved the amount of traffic massively during the morning hours.
However, this exercise is hampered by the Police Force allowing hundreds of vehicles, if not more, to drive straight up to the junction of the road leading to the bridge without joining any queue. This area is patrolled by the two inspectors in charge of this, so these are the officers who allow these vehicles to join directly.
As a law-abiding citizen, who wakes very early and leaves home at 5:30am to join a long queue it annoys you to see individuals who arrive about half hour or more afterwards is allowed to drive straight to the bridge without being stopped. As a citizen, it makes you wonder whether the reason, these individuals are allowed to get away with this is due to some corrupt practices between the officers and these drivers.
These officers would be much better placed along the West Bank and West Coast queue in order to ensure that traffic order is maintained and flow freely towards the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
If this priority lane is eliminated, then I think the morning traffic will be a smooth flow. We all know that we tend to say in Guyana these things happen and say, “Is Guyana, wah we gon do!” but these practices need to stop if we are to move forward as a country.
Regards,
Concerned Driver
