Hypocrisy reigns supreme in the PPP Government

With Guyana’s expanding economy, the necessity for additional labour force, particularly in the healthcare sector, to ensure the effective delivery of quality and adequate services to the citizenry is needed.

Guyanese are fully aware of this reality. In fact, government hiring foreign nurses to address staffing shortages in healthcare facilities is not new. While initially appearing as a pragmatic response to Guyana’s current nurses shortages, the consideration by the PPP Government to offer Bangladeshi nurses higher wages and additional benefits than our local nurses and professionals raises profound ethical and discriminatory concerns.

It reflects a level of unfair and bias treatment that underscores the total disregard and absolute disdain with which the PPP leaders perceive our local nurses, and by extension, other public servants, including teachers. Our nurses have often undergone the same rigorous training and education as their foreign counterparts and are even more dedicated and dutiful in providing quality health care to patients once they are adequately remunerated and supported.

Despite the vast oil wealth available to the nation and the undeniable qualifications and dedication of our nurses, this government persistently undervalues and underpays them and other public servants, while simultaneously favouring their foreign counterparts. The decision of our healthcare professionals to seek opportunities elsewhere is not due to a lack of patriotism, but rather a reflection of the failure of leadership and poor wages. Moreover, the PPP’s divisive tendencies are apparent in their preferential treatment and resource allocation along ethnic lines. It is crucial to recognize that healthcare, as a fundamental aspect of life and well-being, necessitates unity and fair treatment. The government’s inclination to prioritize Bangladeshi nurses over local professionals could deepen divisions within the healthcare facilities in particular and the country in general. These disparities not only demoralize local nurses and jeopardize patient care, but they are dreadful in that they breed resentment and discord among the healthcare workforce and other ethnic groups. Many believe that President Ali’s one Guyana proposal and his constant prattling of inclusivity is hypocritical, insincere and totally dishonest. The decision by the Ali/Jagdeo regime to import nurses from Bangladesh without prior consideration of available nursing resources within the Caribbean region should serve as a stark reminder to CARICOM of the government’s perspective on regional collaboration. It appears that the primary motive behind the PPP’s actions is more about advancing political and ethnic interests rather than genuine concern for the well-being of our healthcare system. This is exemplified by the government’s contradictory approach, which allows mass influxes of nationals from certain countries, such as Venezuela while restricting entry for others, including Haitians, a fellow CARICOM member state, without implementing appropriate safeguards. Such actions demonstrate the PPP’s disregard for regional integration and should be a cause for concern among CARICOM nations.
