GCF End of Year Rapid Blitz caps off strong year for chess

Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) sealed off a highly-fruitful 2024 with a rapid Blitz tournament, which preceded a tremendous year both individually and team-wise for the sport and fraternity.

Chess players seek to wrap up 2024 on a high note during the End of Year Rapid Blitz tournament held at the David Rose Special School.

The tournament commenced on December 28 at the David Rose Special School, where a number of stalwarts got their battle underway, in an intense all out battle and closed off 2024 on a high note as the GCF enters the New Year.

The GCF previously hosted an Open Schools tournament a few weeks ago, which was dominated by the students of Queen’s College.

A number of national stars like Kyle Couchman, Sachin Pitamber, Alex and Nicholas Zhang among others were on show as the GCF and Ministry of Education collaborated to further push the sport across schools.

Back in December, the President’s Cup tournament saw a number of talented chess players further making a mark in their sport, with Candidate Master Taffin Khan and Master Anthony Drayton among the notable winners presented with their trophies by His Excellency President Irfaan Ali.

Jessica Calender also won runner-up for Senior SportsWoman of the Year for 2024 during last month’s National Sports Awards.

The young Kataleya Sam was runner-up for Junior SportsWoman of the Year while Anya Ali copped the SportsWoman of Year, Coupled with Sliver in the 2024 Inter-Guiana Games, the GCF had a strong 2024 with more feats to achieve in the New Year.
