Amid much hype and fanfare with belligerent rhetoric that nothing will stop the referendum from going ahead, from all accounts that referendum was a damp squib which failed to go off or fire with claims alleging 89 percent of eligible voters abstaining.
The deafening silence from Miraflores tells that the success envisaged did not materialize and must be seen as a slap in the face and a rejection of those who forged ahead with the referendum. The celebratory mood following the ICJ ruling last Friday has evaporated, replaced by despair, or so it seems. The referendum failed to deliver the expected outcome and gauges the mood of citizens to the current administration. While Guyana might have gained some reprieve, we cannot let up our resolve, for make no mistake our western neighbour has gone back to the drawing board to strategise and formulate new plans to step forward again.
This isn’t over by a long way.
Regards,
Shamshun Mohamed
