Dear Editor,
The Guyana Peace Council (GPC) condemns in the strongest terms the bellicose decision by the Venezuelan government to hold a national referendum to whip up what appears to be waining internal support for the Maduro regime’s domestic policies but which at the same time, is clearly aimed at fomenting tension between our two countries and disturbing the peaceful socio-economic development of Guyana.
Furthermore, the resolution adopted by the National Assembly of Venezuela is nothing but another attempt to disturb the tranquility of the Caribbean region as a zone of peace
The Maduro regime’s call for a national referendum to beef up its spurious claim to the so-called ‘Zona de Reclamacion’ is another clear departure from the ‘Chavista’ philosophy in favour human development, against war and in support of the brotherhood of nations under the Bolivarian banner.
The call for a national referendum is also a clear indication that the Maduro regime has mistakenly returned to instruments used in the past by the Venezuelan oligarchy to whip up jingoism with a view to creating a state of internal anxiety amongst the Venezuelan electorate as part of Maduro’s campaign for elections due to be held in that country in 2024.
The GPC fully supports the declaration by President Ali in his address to the 78th Session of the UNGA where he demanded that; “Venezuela honours its obligations under the Charter to pursue only peaceful means to settle any disputes it may have with Guyana, including adjudication before the International Court of Justice.”
Further, the GPC unequivocally supports the position adopted by the Ali administration in restating its position that ‘it will not re-enter bilateral talks with Venezuela on the border controversy but will rely on the World Court as the venue for resolution as decided on under the 1966 Geneva Agreement.’
The GPC welcomes the support received from the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, CARICOM, the Commonwealth Ministerial Monitoring Group on the Guyana/Venezuela Border Controversy, the OAS and the international community in general rejecting Venezuela’s referendum plan and support for the protection of Guyana’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The GPC calls for the mobilization of the popular masses and the holding of regional solidarity activities throughout Guyana to support government’s irrevocably stand in defence of Guyana’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Regards,
Clement J. Rohee
