Kaieteur Sports – An Invitational Masters football festival involving four teams is set for the GFC ground today, Youman Nabi holiday.
The over 55s round-robin event will be contested among: Pele Masters, Linden Masters, Club 45 and RastafarEye Patriarchs. The line-up of each team will also include four players between the ages of 50 and 54, but only two could be on the pitch during a game.
At stake will be a number of Trophies donated by friends of the Guyana Football Association of Masters (GUYFAM). Among the donors are: Snooks Jewellery of Linden, Golden Smile, Mark Shurland of Atlanta, as well as past Hockey players Ivor Thompson, Dexter Wyles and Dr. Claude Gooding of California.
A number of past national players are expected to lace up their boots again and take to the field to challenge for the Championship. Guyana’s past outstanding youth and senior goal scorer Vibert Butts will lead the Patriarchs which will also include another former youth and senior national, Christopher Barnwell.
Club 45 will be spearheaded by the evergreen former National, Terrence ‘Old Head’ Lewis along with Eyon Wills, Shawn ‘Cappy’ Jacobs and Dallas Sharples among others.
The former powerfully built youth and senior forward, Herbert Pellew will be in the Pele unit alongside ex-national youth midfielder Dennis ‘Chow Hunte, Michael Pedro and Gary Erskine.
The Linden contingent will be led by Garfield ‘Snooks’ Shepherd and will be inclusive of Compton Duncan, Marlon Washington and Gregory Griffith.
The 40-minute matches will be six all told and kicks of at 09:30hrs when Club 45 tackle RastafarEye Patriarchs and in the 2nd match up Linden face Pele from 10:30am.
At 1pm, it will be Linden versus Club 45, Pele meet Patriarchs at 2pm and in the penultimate game set for 3:30pm, Club 45 confront Pele. The final game at 4:30 pm will bring together Linden and RastafarEye Patriarchs.
