…swimmers miss the mark at Aquatics Centre
Kaieteur Sports – All attention is set on the Hasley Crawford Stadium today as the track and field events kick off for the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.
Guyana’s standout athlete, Tianna Springer, aims to enhance her already remarkable collection of achievements by securing a Commonwealth Youth Games medal in the women’s 400m event.
Springer, 15, currently holds the record for the South American U20 Championship in the 400m, having clinched victory in the same event earlier this year. She also secured the gold medal in the 400m at the 2023 CARIFTA Games.
Another athlete to watch is Narissa McPherson, participating in the women’s 400m.
Adding to the roster is Attoya Harvey, a double medallist at the CARIFTA Games and the CARICOM 10k champion, competing in the women’s 1500m event.
Javon Roberts, a medallist at the CARIFTA Games, is set to challenge in the men’s 1500m.
Meanwhile, during the opening day of swimming at the National Aquatic Centre in Couva, two Guyanese swimmers failed to advance.
Ariel Rodrigues participated in the women’s 50m butterfly, finishing in second place with a time of 30.54 seconds. Despite her strong performance, it wasn’t sufficient for her to advance to the next round.
Rodrigues also competed in the women’s 200m freestyle, clocking in at 2:29.75 but falling short of progressing to the next stage.
As for Elliott Gonsalves, his time of 2:05.00 in the men’s 200m freestyle did not secure his advancement to the next round.
Both Rodrigues and Gonsalves are set to return to the pool today, and the upcoming competition will mark Shareefah Lewis’ inaugural appearance in the event.
