Kaieteur News – President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Wednesday kicked off his official visit to China and spent the day visiting officials and other places of interest in Shanghai.
Ali arrived in China Tuesday and was greeted by officials of the Foreign Ministry and later participated in a tea ceremony. The Office of the President said during his one-week visit, the Head of State will meet with the President of the Republic of China, Xi Jinping and other government officials. Members of Guyana’s business community are also in China and will participate in a number of sessions with major Chinese companies.
On Wednesday, Ali visited Huawei’s Shanghai Research Centre where he met with the company’s senior Vice President, Jeff Wang. After a tour of the facility, the two officials discussed a number of areas for cooperation, including the establishment of an ICT college in Guyana and sending a technical team to assess the needs of the private sector here.
President Ali also visited the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, where he and his team were given a guided tour of the six-storey building which displays Shanghai’s urban planning and development.
The President on Wednesday also met with the Mayor of Shanghai, Mr Gong Zheng. The two leaders discussed several areas of cooperation, including establishing a Shanghai investment desk in Guyana and the possibility of the South American nation hosting the first Guyana/Shanghai expo. President Ali was accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Hilton Todd, Guyana’s Ambassador to China, Her Excellency Anyin Choo, Presidential Advisor on Investment and Business Development, Anthony Whyte and a group of Private Sector representatives.
