Dear Editor,
One thing about the PPP led governments that Guyanese have learned is that there sooner rather than later, a government official will allegedly use their position of influence to facilitate or partake in corrupt practices or engage in misconduct that warrants police investigation and legal action.
In fact, I dare to go so far as to say that these national embarrassments are examples of the type of culture that PPP leadership has cultivated within its party. The PPP tries to portray that the party and their preferred model of government is a democracy. This is far from the truth and many party members are fully aware! Several years ago, I was at a meeting at Freedom House. One of the agenda items involved voting for regional committee representatives. I forget which regions and areas now, but. I recall that a gentleman distributing party membership cards gave me a card belonging to an elderly Indian gentleman and instructed me to vote for a particular candidate whose name I do not recall at this time. This practice continues up to this day.
Now that the party is back in Government, these national embarrassments are manifestations of a party leadership that has cultivated corruption at the party level for decades. In the last 6 months, the PPP government has had to go into damage control mode and use its influence over high-ranking police and other public sector officers to assist government officials to get out of the tangled web they weaved.
Firstly, a police report was made by a female Indian animal rights activist against Guyana’s High Commissioner to India Charrandass Persaud. She accused him of threatening her among other things, Mr. Persaud was recalled. Secondly, the United States Government confiscated the mobile phone and passport of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Mae Thomas as she stopped over in the USA enroute to China. The US Government revoked her visa, barring her from traveling to the USA. It was also revealed that she is on a USA Government watchlist.
Thirdly and most recently, the actions and words of Minister of Local Government Mr. Nigel Dharamlall finally caught up with him. A young Amerindian girl accused him of raping her after coercing her to have a relationship with him for more than one year. This is the same government representative that used a gun to threaten a former Inter-American Development Bank worker after said worker was out with the Minister’s former wife at Palm Court. And readers, I am sure, can recall his infamous dildo remarks to a female member of parliament.
Fourthly, readers will recall the Vice News undercover investigation of Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the PPP, former President of Guyana and current Vice President. The Vice President denied he has ever participated in any corrupt activity, even though he was caught on camera and implicated Su. Su confessed to working as a middleman for the VP. The VP admitted he has done business with Su but rejected that Su was a middleman, facilitating kickbacks for companies and other corrupt transactions involving Government resources and taxpayers’ money.
Prior PPP governments have not fared better. There are several more examples like former Minister of Local Government Kellawan Lall, former Home Affairs Minister Ronald Gajraj, former Presidential Advisor on Empowerment Odinga Lumumba, Kwame McCoy current Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister and former Minister of Natural Resources Robert Persaud to list a few.
Regards,
B. Bacchus
