CWI Rising Stars U19 Men’s/Women’s 50-over tournament Round 1
Kaieteur News – Jamaica boys drew first blood against Guyana by 8 wickets via Duckworth/Lewis Method, after rain intervened in their opening round of the CWI Rising Stars U19 tournament, while the ladies suffered similar fate in their match.
After posting a meager 78 all out in 23. 4 overs, Guyana fell to Jamaica who ended on 78-2 in 14.5 overs.
Jordan Johnson (28), Adrian Weir (19), Steven Wedderburn (18) did the heavy lifting for Jamaica, with the bat which made light work of the chase, as Isai Thorne and Jeremy Sandia grabbed a wicket each for Guyana.
Guyana got off to a up/down start, as their top order looked solid but were not able to fully convert on their starts.
Opening batsman Zachary Jodah fell for a duck, his partner at the top Rampertab Ramnauth hit 2 fours in his 18, but then lost his skipper Mavindra Dindyal for 5 followed by the team’s leading run-scorer last year, Shamar Yearwood who made just 13.
Rain stopped play in the 18th over with the Guyanese on 57-5, with Zeynul Ramsammy and Joshua Rampersaud out in the middle, as Reon Edwards (3-18), M. Clarke (3-13) ripped through the batting order as two other Jamaicans grabbed 2 wickets each.
In other round 1 games, Leewards lost by 42 runs to Windwards Islands after the latter posted 200-8 in 50 overs. Leewards were then kept to 158 in 45.4 overs.
Barbados defeated Trinidad and Tobago by 37 runs. Barbados made 152 all out in 39 overs, thereafter restricting the Twin Island Republic to 115 in 34 overs.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Under-19 leg of the competition, Guyana almost defend a low score but came up short, as they lost by 6 wickets.
Overs were shaved to 13-per side due to weather and Guyana batting first, scored 40-2 in their allotted 13 overs.
Tilleya Madramootoo finished with 12 not out and was the only player for Guyana to reach double figures with Naomi Barakoye (6) and Realeanna Grimmond (05), the next best scorers.
The Windward Island pair of skipper Jannilea Glasgow (1-9) and Niesha Cherry (1-11) was the only two bowlers to make inroads as their team got off to a horrendous start.
Some clinical bowling from Rettemiah who bagged 2 wickets in her opening spell and a run out by some excellent fielding in the deep by the Guyanese, put Leewards back a few steps.
Wickets would continued to come Guyana’s way as the Leewards innings seemed to be falling a apart but a determined Glasgow returned with bat to stroke 18 not out, taking her team home with the score 41-4.
