Dem Boys Seh…
Kaieteur News – Long ago, when dem boys bin small, we used to have more dray carts than truck pon de road. And not even de animal droppings used to upset people because dem used to use it fuh fertilize dem plants.
But now de dray carts are being put out of business and being replaced by mechanical beasts of burdens called trucks and heavy-duty vehicles. De trucks and heavy-duty vehicles causing mayhem on our roads.
At one time, we used to complain how dem trucks going too slow. Dem used to go so slow that dem used to cause delays pon de road. When these colossal machines decided to take a leisurely stroll down the road, traffic used to come to a halt. Horns blared, tempers flared, and the disgruntled masses cursed.
De authorities decided that during peak hours dem trucks gat to park to allow people to get to work on time. But dah system can’t work these days because dem truck now moving faster than a bullet train.
It seems as if overnight de truck turn to speed demons. Dem does come hurling down de road causing pedestrians to cover in fear and other vehicles to scatter like frightened mice. Dem going so fast dese days that some of dem can’t control dem speed. And dem also causing accidents and deaths on de road because when dem hit yuh is harder than a sledge hammer.
Truck and heavy-duty vehicles are now Guyana’s unofficial roller-coasters, providing adrenaline-pumping rides for the thrill-seeking souls brave enough to venture onto the roads. Dodging potholes, swerving through traffic, and praying for divine intervention have become the daily rituals of those unfortunate enough to share the road with these four-wheeled and six-wheeled monsters.
Since we find oil, the truck epidemic spreading. As wealth flowed into the country, so did the influx of heavy-duty vehicles. It’s almost as if they arrived with a mission to create mayhem, to test the limits of human patience and endurance.
Whether they crawl at a snail’s pace or race with the fury of a thousand cheetahs, they have united the people in a shared experience of frustration, terror, and awe. The roads are trembling at their feet and people are wondering whether the roads will ever be safe again for a stroll.
Talk half. Leff half.
