Dear Editor,
There are some small countries, states and territories globally Guyanese haven’t heard of, they are not known for richness of oil and valuable resources and they don’t make world news as they are not big players in geopolitics. Those places, however, have some key things working for them, the poor in these countries have access to the basics for a comfortable life like, food, clothes, shelter, education, healthcare, freedom, justice and little crime. These places are good because their governments abide by the principles of democracy, accountability and transparency and most importantly, they have wise financial, economic and business leaders who manage their economies by studying global economic trends and changes in real time and make their decisions from this to manage their economies.
Question is where are Guyana’s financial, economic and business leaders who will be taking Guyana forward? It looks like there is none who study global economic trends and changes in real time or have competent advisors who can educate the decisionmakers in Govt. As I can’t see, any policy made on global economic trends and changes from Guyana’s leaders and their financial advisors since independence, all they seem to know about finance is debt accumulation. Now more than ever Guyana needs real and wise financial, economic and business leaders based on global economic trends, changes and challenges. The war in Ukraine have had a significant impact on oil, gas, food and precious metals; countries are now holding gold instead of the US dollar for security, the restarting of economies globally from Covid-19 has created a demand for minerals and lumber which Guyana have.
There is a growing demand for passenger airplanes requiring aluminum, as Guyana has bauxite, the foreign companies’ financial advisors in Guyana know this, where are Guyana’s financial advisors? Guyana’s Govt. continues to hide and lie about mining contracts. The financial plan that comes from Govt. include fish cages, shrimp ponds, planting rice, fruits, vegetable and ground provisions. The oil companies will use not use food and water produced in Guyana fully well knowing that they are contaminated and polluted. The financial plan must come the Business Community, not from the you-take-all, give-me-nothing, pay-no-taxes politicians running the economy in deals with foreigners.
Alistair Routledge, President of Exxon Operations Guyana was President of Exxon Operations, Qatar before coming to Guyana. In Qatar, the Qataris made the oil and gas agreements and Exxon signed; in Guyana, Exxon makes the agreements and the Guyana Govt. signs. Can Exxon’s Routledge and spokespersons explain why Guyana and Guyanese have to be treated like doormats unlike Qatar and other countries? I don’t believe Guyana’s politicians are weak and this naïve. I think they have shackles compromising them to stop the abuse of Guyana and Guyanese, or they are just downright evil and corrupt. So it’s up to the Business Community in Guyana to show they like, know, and mean real business for the best interest of Guyana.
Yours truly,
R. David.
