Dear Editor,
So far, the performance of the current head of the EPA is poor and just following his predecessors, which is to be a puppet on a string to party leadership and the oil, mining, bauxite and forestry companies.
Now that Guyana is transforming into an oil and natural resources economy, the EPA head doesn’t seem to understand that his job has now become more important than the President. As the EPA head, he is the line of defense for this country to protect the environment and the citizens, yet this man is affixing his signature to approve all kinds of projects and permits with no objection, protest or questioning the risks of environmental damage to this country.
The recent approval to grant Schumberger Corp. to process radioactive waste without the necessary regulatory precautions was the last straw, this EPA head was risking citizens to radioactive exposure, contamination and poisoning without blinking an eye and it took private citizens to take this fight to the courts and finally, the courts took the side of the people.
The sadness is almost no one paid attention to this, is this how brain-dead Guyanese have become, especially the doctors, the medical association or anyone who has medical or chemical knowledge, what is wrong with you people? Is party politics more important than this? No medical personnel anywhere in the world would have stayed silent in their country with risk of radioactive exposure, contamination and poisoning. Interested citizens should go search the internet for “Chernobyl, Russia” and see for yourself what those who should be protecting Guyana is playing with by neglecting their duties.
I have nothing personal against this or any other EPA head, regardless of race or party, if they choose to be puppets and followers to party leadership, that’s their personal choice and prerogative, but the harshest of criticism must come when EPA heads cannot execute their duties with due diligence as they owe that to the citizens and health of a country. This is not like the other bureaucratic government nine-to-five jobs. The EPA head holds the lives of people in their hands as well as the fate of a country. The EPA head should take the criticisms as wisdom as he is being set up to be the fall guy in case of environmental disasters, as the corporations and government responsible will say the EPA head did the approvals. So once again, EPA head do your job with due diligence as you’re supposed to or leave.
Sincerely,
Radeish David
