Dear Editor,
The football ‘fever’ is now over. Millions of people across the globe watched the games. Qatar must be commended for hosting the games successfully.
Sports can indeed be a unifying medium, one that transcends the boundaries of race, religion or politics. The most recent FIFA World cup games are perhaps the best demonstration of this fact. Millions of people watched the games with great excitement and jubilation. There were some disappointments but the passion for the game was never in doubt. In the final analysis, it is the spirit of the games that really matters.
I am personally not a great fan of football but I have to admit that the victory of Argentina over France did invoke in me a sense of gratification, perhaps more out of continental solidarity. For me, it was not only a victory for Argentina but for the whole of the Americas of which Guyana is the only English-speaking country in mainland South America.
Congratulations to Argentina on winning the World Cup!
Regards,
Hydar Ally

Hard Truths by GHK Lall (Kaieteur News) – For those with Biblical contexts, it said: “no man can serve two masters at the same time.” Sage advice due to its practicality. Divided loyalty is one.
