Guyana makes almost perfect to start IGG table tennis c/chip

Kaieteur News – It was an almost perfect day for Guyana to start the Inter Guiana Games table tennis championship at the National Gymnasium.

Yesterday’s contest between Guyana and Suriname marked the first time in the IGG’s history that table tennis was played at the tri-nation games.

Except for the Boys U14 singles where Suriname’s Shariq Bipat defeated Ebo McNeil 3 – 2, all the other categories were won by Guyana in dominating fashion.

McNeil’s clash with Bipat went down to the wire, with the Linden-based player opening with a 12-10 victory in the first game.

Bipat bounced back to win the second 8-11, while McNeil won the third 11-8. However, McNeil looking to close things out would go on to lose the other matches 9-11, 10-12.

Up until McNeil’s loss to Bipat, Guyana had won the three previous matches.

Colin Wong defeated Bipat 3-1 (11-9, 11-13, 11-4, 11-9), Jasmine Billingy and Rahim Saalih got the better of Bipat and Maria Kanhai 3 – 0 (11-8, 11-1, 11-6) in the Mixed Doubles and Billingy had beaten Kanhai 3 – 0 (11-1, 11-5, 11-3).

In the fifth match of the day, Samara Sukhai got past Yasmin Jodiwongso in straight games (11-4, 11-4, 11-1).

Akira Watson also didn’t drop a game in her match with Kayleigh Idrisman (11-4, 11-7, 11-4), and the pair of Shakacey Damon and Seona Barker, facing Jodiwongso and Idrisman in the Girls Doubles event, won 3-1 (11-2, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10).

The final match on the opening day for table tennis saw Saalih getting the better of Bipat 3 – 0 (13-11, 11-3, 12-10).

The two countries will meet today from 9:00 am to determine who will lift the IGG table tennis trophy for the first time. (Rawle Toney)
