Dear Editor,
In his influential seasons of lectures, Thomas Carlyle advanced the argument of the Great Man Theory of History. Even though there was never a consensus, it was contended in the Encyclopedia of Philosophy that “Any generalization that affirms the historical significance of outstanding human individuals can be termed as a “great man theory of history.” The expression has been most frequently used in reference to comprehensive claims to the effect that great men are the key to their intelligibility of history, it is also applied, however, to generalization that merely states how great men., as one factor among others, are historically significant. “
We have for many generations treated the essence of our lives, which is our prowess in sporting events as secondary. Note in our media that the report on sports has always been relegated to the back page.
As a consequence of this, we have tended to ignore the exploits and the glory that our sports personalities deserve. Often times ignoring the importance of our history and the role that sports, the arts and culture can play in securing the elevation of our society at home and abroad. I wish to note three related matters, first last Thursday, there was a significant event held for the first batch of 110 pioneering students who took Golf as a Physical Education Elective at C.S.E.C in Guyana’s history achieving 100% pass rate with 88 Grades I’s and 22 Grades 2’s.
Here full credit must be given to Mr. Aleem Hussein, President, Guyana Golf Association.
Hats off to him.
It’s good that golf as a physical and educational tool is now available to every Guyanese child, for I remember the time when the playing of golf was the preserve of the European plantocracy and their local counterparts.
Those with melanin in their skins were not allowed to join the golf club which had that large portion of land, part of which now constitutes the National Park. Second, last Sunday, there was a cycling event, Duckie’s Memorial Cycle Race, involving all age groups where the prize giving took place opposite Camp Ayanganna to honour Randolph Singh also known as ‘Duckie,’ organized by Victor Rutherford, a former champion cyclist.
Hats off to him.
Over the weekend, I learnt of the passing of Neville Chan who had a beautifully sculpted body and won the 1948 Mr. Guiana bodybuilding contest. He passed his 93rd year. He was a figure of significance to the bodybuilding fraternity and I hope that the Bodybuilding fraternity finds some way to honour a man I consider as one of our best.
Unfortunately, in sport and so many other areas, we are not sharing the exploits of our earlier sports personalities. Many who operated in difficult circumstances but thanks to the grit and determination who made us as a people proud. Dear Editor, I could only remind ourselves of the significance of Dave Martin’s song with the Tradewinds, “Where are your heroes Caribbean?” As we are blessed with an abundance of wealth, it is a good time for us to practice and promote ancestral piety.
Regards,
Hamilton Green
