What does being Afro-Guyanese, proud, and PPP really mean?

Dear Editor,

I return to PM Mark Phillips’ recent statement where he declared “As an Afro-Guyanese from the town of Linden, I am proud to be part of the PPP/C Administration where all Guyanese, inclusive of Afro-Guyanese, have equal access to opportunities and where national policies and programmes are never influenced by race.”

What does being Afro-Guyanese, proud, and PPP really mean? In the PM’s case especially, as the Government’s second-in-charge, does it mean that he stands on guard, constantly vigilant, reversing any acts or decisions by the PPP that deny equal respect and equal access to opportunities for all? Does he, for example, call up the relevant Ministers to insist and instruct that funding for all RDCs and NDCs be devoid of political (and entwining ethnic) considerations?

If so, what has he done regarding the recent spiteful decision by the Government to withhold funding from IDPADA-G? On this matter, he would be fully aware that his Government’s ruse about the need to audit the accounts of IDPADA-G has been fully exposed as such by the presence and submissions of updated accounts by the entity. The PM also would be aware that this whole affair is nothing more than VP Jagdeo engaging in his usual vindictive petty politics just because he can. So, let the PM tell us what makes him proud about this? And let him tell us if he plays the role of in-house enforcer against PPP discrimination or sees absolutely no need for one.
