Dear Editor,
In Guyana and beyond when evil is done by someone people like, these people stay silent and their loud voices from the megaphone comes when people who they don’t like, do evil. The current bruhaha from the Hindu leadership in Guyana is how they are offended by the cricket festival celebrations and planned Diwali Rumfest as these are against the holiness of Navratri and Diwali. As a Hindu, I did my fasting for Navaratri, will do so for Diwali, and will not be attending any Rumfest. However, people including Hindus have a right to do whatever they want once they are not breaking law. They are Christians who do fasting, praying and other quiet sacred observances during Christmas, if these Christians says festive partying is offensive to them, how many people will cancel their festive Christmas parties?
Indian Nationals all over the world celebrates these religious days with either having parties as that’s their version of observance, and others do fasting, praying and other quiet sacred observances. Where are the outraged voices of the offended Guyana Hindus on the rape crises in India and treatment worse than animals for the low caste Hindus in India – whom are mostly ancestors of Indo-Guyanese? Dead silence! How many times those Hindus offended by the Cricket Carnival protested these injustices in India at the Indian High Commission in Guyana? Not once. What one perceives as evil and immoral will always be there, that’s the nature of the world we live in, one of the significances of ‘Mother Laxmi’ on the lotus flower, is that from the dirty mud, something clean, pure, and divine can emerge, similarly speaking out and standing up against all evil and not being selective is how one can emerge from an immoral environment.
The sports and entertainment business in the free western world will always have scantily dressed females, alcohol, and music as part of the activities, even the Islamic State of Qatar hosting the largest one sport event in the world, the Soccer World Cup, knows what’s at play, the see-through fishnet dress worn by the wife of the Qatari Leader during the World Cup Draw shows they know how the business works. The day Pakistan played Bangladesh in the last Cricket World Cup in England, the menu outside the ground for that day was pork, this how the sports and entertainment business works, the business goes on regardless whoever is offended by the activities.
The ‘good over evil fight’ done by our deities we pray to, is the fighting of the most evil thing plaguing the land at that time, not the secondary ones, the most evil thing in Guyana now is the strangling oil contract squeezing the nation and its’ people into a slow and agonizing death, yet no outrage from the offended religious on the most evil thing in this land. “Our voices must be heard on future Cricket Carnivals, ” shouts the offended religious, yet these and other religious voices of outrage, are not behind Glenn Lall, Yog Mahadeo, Melinda Jankie and others fighting the greatest evil plaguing the country, which clearly shows speaking out and standing up against evil is now selective.
Regards,
R. David
