Dear Editor,
I read a letter penned by one Jai Lall in which he quoted from one of our most respected and experienced persons. He attempted to assail the PNC for all of our evils in response to an appeal for unity to deal with powerful external forces.
The contents of his letter were devoid of facts and any credible evidence.
I said to myself that Jai Lall, whoever he may be, has entered the contest for fiction writing for the next Guyana prize. Since I am not a fiction-writer, I will not respond to many of the absurdities in his letter but Editor I’ll just select one for a response.
He wrote and I quote it was the PNC Party which destroyed Guyana, causing half of the country’s population to migrate, seeking greener pastures for peace, bliss, happiness, safety, security, prosperity, good health and contentment, among others.
What an inaccuracy unsupported by figures or perhaps he hasn’t got an idea of what a half is.
After World War I ended in 1918, many Guyanese, the majority Afro-Guyanese moved to London. After the end of World War II, this movement, now mainly to North America and including large numbers of Indo-Guyanese continued.
With the Cold War at its height in the 50s and 60s, Guyanese also moved to some Caribbean countries and Canada. In fact, Canada became the home for many Guyanese of Portuguese (Madeira) ancestry and today, there is a small number of Portuguese left in Guyana.
But before Jai Lall speaks spouting old propaganda, I remind him that during the depression of the 20s, many Indians were opting to return to Mother India and some did based on arrangements made for them as immigrants.
To stem this flow, a prominent member of the Indian Congress came to Guyana and at many Meetings on the Coast persuaded Indians that they should not return to India.
Editor, whoever Jai Lall is, I challenge him to justify the many sweeping anti-PNC statements contained in his letter published 8th September, 2022, Kaieteur News and titled ‘The application of “Beware Brother” is knocking on many doors.’
