Dear Editor,
Having read “My Trip Guyana” (Aug 13) and the complaints the writer mentions of the public about corruption and shoddy government infrastructure work, some questions creep into my brain for the Vice President, the most powerful politician in Guyana. As the senior most member of the cabinet and one who is most knowledgeable of the needs of Guyanese, including members of parliament and cabinet, can the VP please advise what is a reasonable amount of money required by citizens, your colleagues as well, to live a normal, comfortable, decent lifestyle? In view of the large amount of wealth being accumulated by some of your colleagues and some government functionaries, siphoned off from projects that go unchecked, does the VP think it is appropriate to allow them to continue to siphon off the country’s wealth? How does the VP propose to deal with it?
Considering the fact that several functionaries already amass multiple properties enough for themselves, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and generations to come, does the VP think it is appropriate to allow them to continue to siphon off the country’s wealth at the expense of the poor and the working class whose interests your party is supposed to represent? If not, what plans does the VP have to deal with the situation?
Your truly,
Shriram Ketwaru (on behalf of working class)
