Shadick’s death comes after a period of illness.
Kaieteur News understands that Shadick was recently released from the hospital and was at home.
She was a former People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Minister of Government, holding the portfolio of Human Services and Social Security.
She was also appointed as the eighth Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana (UG) on January 20, 2015, taking over from Pro-Chancellor Dr. Prem Misir.
Ms. Shadick was also Chairman of the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority and a member of GECOM at the time of her passing.
As the news of her death spread, messages of condolences to the Shadick family and loved ones flooded Facebook and other media platforms. Attorney General Anil Nandlall, SC, reflected that Shadick played her part in life, serving others and her country.
“…You did it your unique way… fortunate am I to have met you and shall always be grateful for the much you have done for me. I know you have lived your life to its fullest, upon your own terms and conditions and with little or no regrets. I will miss you … nay we will all miss you. May your soul now enjoy eternal peace,” the Attorney General wrote on his Facebook page.
General Secretary of the PPP/C, Bharrat Jagdeo also expressed condolences on behalf of himself and the party, following the passing.
He noted that, “Comrade Shadick served in many capacities, including as a Member of Parliament and Minister of Human Services and Social Security, and more recently, a Commissioner on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) up until her passing.”
“She left a rich legacy of service to the people of Guyana.”
In another post, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand wrote, “Bibi Shadick was a beloved and revered educator known for teaching Mathematics well and changing lives long before she became a lawyer, Minister and GECOM Commissioner.”
GECOM in recognising Shadick as a long-standing member of the Commission noted in a statement that her death is “extremely shocking since she actively participated as usual at the meetings of the Commission as recent as Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week (last week).”
As a Commissioner at GECOM, Shadick’s efforts were consistently focused on the efficient management of registration and election projects as constitutionally mandated, enacted in the legislation as well as international best practices, GECOM outlined in its statement. “Her principled position was to ensure that there was compliance with fiscal and administrative procedures. Commissioner Shadick’s tenacity of purpose was an ever-present feature during deliberations at the level of the Commission on matters of importance. Her contributions were always meaningful,” the statement added.
