Scientific and Medical Research in Guyana

Dear Editor,

Guyana has shown that we are home to hundreds of unknown species of mushrooms that are now being researched for their medical benefits. Most of the analysis is being done overseas. Creating the local capabilities to carry out such research will take advantage of the brainpower being developed in the country as well as encourage further exploration of the unknown biodiversity within our rainforest. The Ministry of Education is laying the foundation for educational development. Regaining a very high literacy rate in the country as we had before will prepare the country for such an undertaking. The strategy around the use and purpose of Iwokrama is just at its beginning, and there is an opportunity to make it a hub of intellectual and research activity.

Heart/Cardiovascular disease is the top cause of death for humanity. Our country has been impacted in the past by this medical illness at the highest levels of our leadership. There is an opportunity to also be a part of the solution. In the West, cancer is ranked as the 2nd highest cause of death for humans. Houston Texas is known for its excellent cancer treatment and Israel has shown significant advances in discovering effective treatments for certain types of cancers. Establishing a cardiovascular and cancer research institute in Iwokrama may be just what the doctor ordered to allow for the simultaneous understanding of the health benefits of new species as we continue the exploration of the extensive biodiversity within our rainforest, while also focusing on an applicable solution for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. The intellectual capital of the country will significantly increase as well as access to funds to support such an undertaking. An undertaking that blends well with a vision for the sustainable development of a green and healthy economy. More importantly, being a part of the Guiana Shield, which is known as the lungs of the planet, helps make this undertaking a strong part of a larger vision for a healthy planet.

Our country has been blessed with being a part of the Amazon, which is home to more species than any other location on the planet. This is the source of Guyana’s power to have an impact on the planet, and with great power comes great responsibility. Our country must focus on the positive impact we can have on our planet.
