First Harpy Eagles practice match called off due to rain…
By Sean Devers
After just one day of play, the first three-day practice match for the Guyana Harpy Eagles, the third day was officially called off yesterday due to the soggy condition of the Everest ground which has taken a pounding from two consecutive days of heavy rain.
The sun appeared after lunch in all its brilliance but by then the damage had already been done.
At the end of day one, Leon Johnson’s XI were on the ropes on 18-3 replying to the 177 made by Keemo Paul’s XI as the batters failed to convert small starts in something substantial.
The second and final practice game is scheduled for May 9 at the Providence Stadium where the adverse weather should not make as big an impact as in this game due to its faster drying surface.
Guyana start the last three matches of the 2022 CWI Regional Four-Day First Class cricket tournament when they face-off with defending Champions Barbados on May 18 in Trinidad where they will also play Jamaica on May 25 before competing with host Trinidad and Tobago from June 1 at the Queen’s Park Oval.
The Harpy Eagles are expecting to travel on Sunday, May 15, 2022 for Port-of-Spain.
Guyana began this season by beating the Windwards Volcanoes by one wicket before in the next game which ended on February 17 they were defeated by an innings and 57 runs by the Leeward Islands Hurricanes.

The batting continues to be a major issue and from the limited action seen in the first practice game, the most likely batting replacements; Trevon Griffith (0), Mathew Nandu (0) and Kevlon Anderson, who was looking good on 19 before edged a catch to the Keeper, all failed the make the most of their opportunities.
Guyana’s winning streak of five consecutive titles was broken in the 2020 season by Barbados who held an unassailable lead when the truncated season was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic with two rounds remaining in March 2020.
Head Coach Esuan Crandon told Kaieteur Sports that this washed out game has prevented the Coaches from having a good look at the players in various competitive match situations.
“We were anticipating a better batting display on the second and third day from the batters but they never got that opportunity. We’re looking forward to the next game starting on Monday at the stadium and we’re also expecting the batters to put up a better fight with the intention of batting for long periods and score big,” added the former Guyana fast bowler.
“At this point in time, with the tournament just around the corner they’re so much we can do in relation to technical skill work before the next practice game and the tournament.
However, the focus has and will continue to be on the mental aspect of the game with special emphasis on tactical game plan and the mental capacity to maintain sharp focus for a sustainable period of time.
We want all the batters to be more responsible and don’t take these practice games for granted…we asked them to treat these games as a first class match.
We will be engaging all players prior to and during the next game and reinforce our main objectives and what we expect from them,” concluded Coach Crandon.
