Reduced salt in the soil will spurt cane growth and boost cane yield per acre

Kaieteur News – My comments are as follows:
We need to change the current way of planting sugar. The soil on which sugar is grown was reclaimed from the sea by mangroves. As a result, there is trapped sea salt between the soil particles. This salt is detrimental to sugar cultivation. It stunts the growth of cane. It is for this reason that the cane harvested today is much thinner than the cane of four decades ago, hence lower yield per acre. We need to get back to the drainage system of 49 miles of in-field drainage per square mile of cultivated land. This will allow us to flood the fields mid-crop for 2-3 days using the 12 miles of high-level irrigation canals per square mile. In so doing, we will be able to dissolve (leach) some of the salt trapped in the soil. The dissolved salt can then be drained to the sea via the saline (corrupted to silane) canal. Reduced salt in the soil will spurt cane growth and boost cane yield per acre.
