Dear Editor,
The poor and the middle class will not be among the attendees at the oil or energy conference. And they will not be beneficiaries of our oil. So far, money has not been transferred to them.
The energy conference is for the ruling and opposition elites. The previous oil conferences benefited the ruling elite and this one is exclusively for the elites of the ruling and opposition parties. Both sides are opposed to renegotiation of the oil contract. And the elite of both sides will enjoy the three meals and the snack breaks between the meals during the four-day conference and longer. We already read reports of a dinner meal being close to G$20,000 per person with lunch three quarter and breakfast half that amount. The elites will bring their spouses and family members and splurge. The poor and working class can’t afford $60K a day to eat and government won’t pay for their attendance. So clearly, that conference is not for poor working class folks.
Has any government (PPP or PNC) held an energy conference for poor folks – on how the population would benefit from oil? Was there any energy conference on the Corentyne or West Berbice or West Coast or Essequibo or the interior to educate the people about oil and what they should do to be beneficiaries. Look at the people who will be participants at the oil conference! And look at the registration fee! Where can ordinary Guyanese fit in? The government uses our money to entertain foreigners to our neglect. How will the conference benefit the nation’s poor and working class?
Yours truly,
Calvin Braithwaite

(Kaieteur News) – For years, we have called May 5, “Arrival Day.” It is a name that sounds inclusive but, in reality, obscures more than it reveals.
