Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – It is worrying that Vice President Jagdeo is recorded saying that the 22-member Public Accountability and Oversight Committee in the Natural Resources Act will be removed.
Was that oversight provision not included to give us all comfort in knowing that our resources will be managed in a very transparent way and that we will have a say?
Did this Government not promise to involve the public in discussions before any amendments are made to the Natural Resources Fund Act?
Already we have seen none or very little engagement of the public with the proposed Electoral reforms. With the (oversight) Public Procurement Commission not in place and several contracts seem to be awarded with unanswered questions, is the removal of oversight of Government’s decisions and acts not against our legally entitled ‘ inclusivity’? Would this Commission also be removed because it is ‘cumbersome’?
Are we to assume that those who we voted for, once they are in office, feel they can do whatever they like, regardless of our concerns and fears; and that our satisfaction no longer matters?
