Nov 16, 2021 Letters
Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – On reading a letter to the editor in this daily November, 13th 2021, by one Mr. Emille Giddings, in which he advocated the deepening of drains to absorb more water, I recalled a recent article by the BBC News on the concept of sponge cities used in China to deal with flooding.
The approach aims at creating landscape to absorb more water, slow the drainage flow by meandering drainage instead of straight lines, and lastly a sink to hold water for when it cannot be emptied into the river.
Editor I confess, that I am not a Hydrological engineer, but given our efforts to drain the water from the city as quickly as possible via pumps and sluices have not always been successful, incorporating or adapting some strategies from the sponge city concept into our drainage plan may just give us the advantage we need in dealing with excessive rainfall in the city.
Sincerely,
Suryaveer
