Motie’s omission exposes deeper crisis in West Indies Cricket

The issue is not just Gudakesh Motie, his consistent exclusion from the West Indies team just shines a spotlight on a deeper issue and pervasive problem.
Motie’s excellent performance at the 2025 CPL is evident as well as being an excellent fielder and often chalking needed runs on the board; despite this, Motie has been dropped on numerous instances and every spin bowler faces intermittent quiet results.
As an example, look at Bashir bowling against New Zealand batsmen.
Daren Sammy should not be the sole selector and coach; this in some ways is a conflict of interest. In addition, there is no disclosure of minutes of Windies Cricket board meetings.
The population within the region of East Indians arguably has more than 25% including expats such as myself residing outside the region but identify as a West Indian both by birth and heritage.
Yet that number is not represented within the regional team and to make the point, reverse the scenario where players of African descent were excluded in an all-East Indian team with the same population numbers.
There is also noticeable absence of a business plan with no strategic outlook. Further, the president, Dr. Kishore Shallow has a full-time demanding job as an MP in a newly elected government.
In addition, matches are consistently played at Sir Vivian Richards venue in St. Johns Antigua (Population: 106k) with zero attendance.
The team has to include at least two to three East Indian players to gain exposure and some degree of experience at first class level.
That said, let us not just cast aspersions only the regional board, coach and team, when there is astounding silence within the region especially from persons of East Indian descent.
Unless this is frontally exposed and discussed, this abhorrent practice of excluding competent players of East Indian descent will simply continue with disastrous results.
