Sampson, Grosvenor power unblemished Ariel to glory in open division…
By Zaheer Mohamed
Kaieteur News – A new champion was crowned in the open category when the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc Prime Minister’s T20 Cup 5 concluded on Sunday night at the National Stadium, Providence.
Ariel did well to maintain their unbeaten streak as they defeated Regal by eight wickets in the final to take their first title. Speedboat and Regal have over the years dominated this division, but Ariel have proved that they are now a force to be reckoned with following some fine all-round display.
Essequibian Quentin Sampson was consistently brilliant and along with Shauz Grovesnor were instrumental in their team’s accomplishment. Sampson and Regal’s Chien Gittens made attacking centuries in the preliminary round, and an exciting finale was anticipated given that the two leading batsmen were on opposing sides, however the final result had a lot to do with what transpired around them.
Regal failed to captialise on a solid start following their insertion. Openers Sachin Singh and Patrick Rooplall put on 66 in six overs as Regal looked on course for a huge total. The pair hardly encountered any hiccups as they looked positive from the onset with Singh hitting one four and two sixes and Rooplall striking two fours and a similar number of sixes. However, with the introduction of Sampson, the scoring rate dropped considerably. Sampson removed both openers- Singh was bowled for 23, while Rooplall was caught for 31. Sampson then accounted for danger man Gittens without scoring before Richard Latif was caught off Chandreshaker Arjune for 13 as Regal slipped into further trouble.
Skipper Fazal Rafiek, the only other batsman to reach double figures, hit a solitary boundary before he was taken off Dayanand Singh for 14 as Ariel bowlers maintained their consistency.

Jonathan Fernandez sent back Sewchand Budhu (06) and Kelvin Orford (01), and along with Keyon Sinclair mopped up the rest of the batting as Regal were bowled out for 129 in exactly 20 overs. Fernandez grabbed 4-24 from four overs and Sampson 3-7 off four.Latif provided Regal with the breakthrough when he disturbed the stumps of David Lukenauth for seven and an exciting final seemed likely, but Grovesnor and Brian Mangar steadied the chase nicely to put their team on course.
Grovesnor struck five fours and two sixes in a well controlled unbeaten 50 while Mangar was bowled by Fazal Rafiek for 40 with one four and five sixes.
Sampson struck a cameo 25 not out with four sixes as Ariel replied with 133-2 in 11.2 overs. Sampson who hails from Caria Caria, Essequibo was named man-of-the-match and most valuable player with 231 runs and eight wickets.
