Kaieteur News – Firefighters from the West Ruimveldt Fire Station were called into action around 13:25hrs yesterday after a truck with the name ARMOROC caught on fire at Houston on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD).
As a result of the blaze, traffic coming from the various access roads leading to the East Bank corridor was backed-up for miles.
Deputy Fire Chief, Gregory Wickham, told Kaieteur News that the fire was caused by a ruptured fuel line in the cabin of the truck. Wickham said that firefighters acted promptly and contained the blaze before it affected other vehicles and infrastructure in proximity to the vehicle.
The Deputy Fire Chief added that no one was injured during the combustion. According to an eyewitness, he saw “large flames and thick billowing smoke” coming from the cabin of the truck. He said that he was unable to see if the driver was in the truck at the time of the incident.
While the blaze was being extinguished by the firefighters, police were summoned to the scene to divert traffic.
